Tributes shared on GMB
Richard Madeley and Ranvir Singh shared the news during Friday's instalment of the ITV show (October 23) as part of the entertainment segment with Rishi Davda. Rishi said: "Tributes have been pouring in for actor Tom Skerritt, who has died at the age of 93. He did star in Steel Magnolias, and Julia Roberts, his co-star, is one of those to pay tribute."
Roberts and Skerritt starred together in the 1989 movie Steel Magnolias, and she called him a 'shining light of a gentleman' in an online post. He also featured in iconic films like Top Gun and Alien, and appeared on TV shows such as Brothers and Sisters and Cheers.
Family statement
His family, which includes five children, said he left behind a legacy that reaches far beyond the screen through his work with mental health, veterans and river conservation charities. The news of his passing was confirmed by his loved ones, who revealed the veteran actor had died from natural causes.
In a statement to People magazine, they described being utterly "heartbroken" by their loss. They said: "He was a loving husband to Julie; father to Andy, Erin, Matt, Colin, and Emiko; grandfather to Sara, Maddison, Sunny, Louisa, and Georgia; and great-grandfather to Marigold and Ravi. We are heartbroken by his loss."
The statement continued: "While the world knew Tom through his remarkable acting career, we knew him for his humour, curiosity, wisdom, generosity, and the love he brought into our lives. We are incredibly grateful for the love and support being shown by his friends, colleagues, and fans. We ask for privacy as our family grieves. Information regarding a memorial will be shared at a later date."
Hollywood tributes
Following the news of his passing, tributes flooded in from across Hollywood. Actress Lauren Holly said: "I adored Tom Skerritt. I was lucky enough to work with him on more than one project, but the first was Picket Fences. He was our leader. His example made those years such a joy, and we all loved and respected him so much."
She added: "He cared deeply for his family, both the one at home and the one at work. He cared deeply for his planet and all of its inhabitants. He had a huge impact on my life, and so many memories I have of him include sharing fits of crippling laughter. Rest easy, my friend. I will think of you often."
Justin Shenkarow also paid tribute, saying: "Rest easy, Tom. You were loved by so many, and I will miss you tremendously. I'm incredibly grateful that I had the privilege of working with you on Picket Fences. You're a legend."
