Ex-Publicist Slams Huw Edwards' New Blog as 'Terrible Idea'

Huw Edwards' former publicist, Barry Tomes, has publicly condemned the disgraced BBC anchor's latest venture—a mental health blog launched earlier this week—calling it a 'terrible idea' and urging him to take it down. Edwards, 64, admitted in 2024 to accessing 41 indecent images of children, including seven of the most serious category, and received a six-month prison sentence suspended for two years.

Blog Launch Triggers Backlash

On Wednesday, June 24, 2026, Edwards launched a Substack blog offering 'commentary and analysis' on current affairs and mental health. The move quickly backfired, with social media users accusing him of lacking remorse. In response, Edwards claimed that 'those exercised by the piece might have missed the intent expressed' on the blog.

Former Publicist Speaks Out

In an interview with LBC on June 26, Tomes argued that Edwards lacks a 'good moral compass' and should abandon the blog entirely. 'I just think he's not got a good moral compass here. He should go away and do none of this at all. I said to him that people actually don't care,' Tomes stated.

'You've got to understand, they don't care what your opinion is anymore. You pleaded guilty; you now have that on your record. You should think about how you want to re-emerge, but not re-emerge with your old job or your old thing,' Tomes added. He drew a parallel to Gary Glitter, noting that some people might still listen, but the general consensus is that Edwards is 'vile' and his opinions are unwelcome.

Public Reaction Intensifies

Viewers quickly took to X (formerly Twitter) to express their disapproval. One user wrote: 'Some people in the public eye don't seem to understand when their career is over. To think the public will still care about you when you pleaded guilty to possessing paedophilia says a lot about Huw Edwards' personality.' Another commented: 'What he's got to understand is that there will be no comeback.' A third user stated: 'Huw Edwards is a filthy paedophile who should be locked away. We don't want to see or hear about him ever again.'

Impact and Implications

Tomes emphasized that Edwards should consider a different path to re-emerge in society, but not through his old profession. 'Some people will listen to him. Gary Glitter still has videos being posted on the internet. But I think the general consensus of opinion is that, "You're vile, and we don't really care what you've got to say." And to be honest with you, if he cured cancer, people still wouldn't care,' Tomes concluded.
