Everton's Braiden Graham Earns Northern Ireland Call-Up

Senior figures within the Northern Ireland setup have emphasised that Everton prospect Braiden Graham fully deserves his call-up to the senior squad. The 18-year-old is part of the team that defeated Guinea last week and is now preparing for a clash with France on Monday, which could see him make his full international debut.

Pathway for Youth

Graham's selection is being held up as an example of the federation's commitment to providing young talent with a clear route to the first team. However, it has been stressed that the opportunity has only been granted because his development is believed to warrant it.

Andy Waterworth, Northern Ireland's academy chief, said: "Naturally I am delighted for the boys. They are two great lads, very humble and hardworking. They have sacrificed a lot, and Michael O'Neill will tell you they are in the squad on merit."

Waterworth, a former Northern Ireland youth international, added: "If you perform well for your clubs, albeit below senior level, Michael will monitor your progress. They have turned up for youth internationals and scored goals. It's a proven pathway."

Potential Debut Against France

Ceadach O'Neill, also 18 and of Arsenal, came off the bench against Guinea on Thursday. Graham could receive a similar opportunity against France, one of the World Cup favourites. Should he play, it would mark his first senior appearance for his country before his Everton debut, though he was recalled early from his Christmas break to be on the bench for Premier League and FA Cup matches.

Graham was Everton's under-21s player of the season, scoring 26 goals for the side last season and contributing to the U18s' FA Youth Cup run. He made his senior debut for Linfield at age 15.

Future Plans

David Moyes praised Graham's development but did not introduce him to the first team as Everton pursued European qualification. Graham will join the first team for pre-season, but a loan move is likely, with interest from the Football League already reported.

Graham said: "I've had a good season and enjoyed it – scoring goals and playing well. I'm really happy to receive the Under-21s Player of the Season award. I'll keep working hard in the off-season and then come back and hope to have a good pre-season and kick on – maybe go on loan or stay here."
