Newcastle United will reportedly make life difficult for Manchester United if they attempt to sign Lewis Hall, with the 21-year-old left-back said to be a top target and an internally approved addition at Old Trafford.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle do not want to sell Hall this summer. The Magpies have already generated significant revenue from player sales and are under no pressure to cash in again.
Newcastle's summer income
Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali were sold to Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur respectively for around £170m. When the £125m agreed with Liverpool for Alexander Isak on last summer's deadline day is added, Newcastle have brought in almost £300m.
Bruno Guimaraes is also expected to join Arsenal over the next month, with a reported fee of up to £80m for the Brazil international. That would further strengthen Newcastle's hand in negotiations.
United's left-back hunt
Despite already making five signings, United are still active in the market. Andrey Santos, Karl Darlow and Youri Tielemans arrived from Chelsea, Leeds United and Aston Villa respectively within the space of two days last month, while Kit Margetson and Tynan Thompson have also joined the club.
However, it is approaching three weeks since a senior signing was announced, and left-back appears to be the priority. Luke Shaw is the only senior option in the position, with Harry Amass having rotated alongside him during pre-season.
Amass could still leave on loan or permanently this summer. If he does, Noussair Mazraoui and Patrick Dorgu would be the alternatives, though both are more comfortable in other positions.
United are also credited with an interest in Barcelona's Alejandro Balde and Racing Santander's Jorge Salinas, while Archie Brown and Djed Spence have been mentioned as English alternatives. Spence was selected in Thomas Tuchel's 26-player World Cup squad ahead of Hall.
Hall first entered the England set-up two years ago under Lee Carsley, Gareth Southgate's interim replacement, at the expense of Shaw.
