Patrick Godfrey, the esteemed actor who graced both stage and screen alongside Hollywood legends such as Drew Barrymore, Maggie Smith, Dame Judi Dench, and Anne Hathaway, has passed away at the age of 93. The star, known for his roles in Doctor Who, Les Misérables, and Ever After: A Cinderella Story, died peacefully at his home this week, as confirmed by his representatives.
A Life Dedicated to Acting
His agency, Markham Froggatt and Irwin, released a heartfelt statement: "It is with great sadness that we can confirm Patrick Godfrey passed away last night. He died peacefully at home surrounded by his family. Paddy was an exceptionally talented actor and a remarkable individual, and we will miss him greatly." The cause of death has not yet been disclosed.
Godfrey leaves behind his wife, Amanda Walker, an accomplished actress known for her performances in 28 Weeks Later and A Room With a View, as well as appearances in Heartbeat and Casualty. The couple married in 1960 and had two children: Kate, who serves as Head of Voice at the Royal Shakespeare Company, and Richard.

Born in Finsbury in 1933, Godfrey achieved fame during the 1970s following his screen debut in Miss Julie. He later featured in numerous British cinema gems, including Clockwise, A Room With a View, and Heat and Dust. Throughout his career, he worked alongside acting legends such as John Cleese, Dame Judi Dench, and the late Maggie Smith.
His film appearances included roles in Les Misérables with Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, and Russell Crowe, as well as The Borderlands, Mr Turner, and Breathe. On television, he portrayed Major Cosworth across two Doctor Who episodes aired in 1971 and featured in the police series Z-Cars.

From 1987 to 1996, Godfrey tackled three separate characters in The Bill while also starring in shows including Midsomer Murders, My Family, and Doc Martin. His last screen role came as the butler in a 2019 instalment of His Dark Materials. The performer also enjoyed a distinguished stage career, performing in productions of The Crucible, Witness for the Prosecution, and numerous Shakespeare works throughout the years.
