ITV's Coronation Street paid a special television tribute to former director Kay Patrick, who has died at the age of 84. At the end of Tuesday's episode, June 30, a photograph of Patrick appeared on screen with the words: 'In memory of Kay Patrick 1941-2026.'
Career at Coronation Street
Kay Patrick joined Coronation Street in 1994 and remained with the soap for 21 years, directing more than 250 episodes. Her death occurred on Friday, June 5, and was publicly announced last week. Her funeral service took place on Monday.
Patrick was widely praised for her direction of the farewell episode for character Hayley Cropper, portrayed by Julie Hesmondhalgh, who left the show in 2014 after 16 years. In the episode, Hayley decided to end her own life rather than suffer the pain of pancreatic cancer, leaving her husband Roy Cropper, played by David Neilson, heartbroken.
Praise for Sensitive Direction
Julie Hesmondhalgh previously remarked on Patrick's direction of the poignant episode. She said: 'The almost holy atmosphere she created in the studio during those last scenes ... She instinctively knew that it was a one-take moment, and so just blocked it and shot it with such understated love and sensitivity. It's entirely down to Kay that those scenes were as raw and memorable as they were.'
The episode was watched by more than 10 million viewers and was praised for its sensitive approach to the divisive subject matter.
Reflections on Her Career
Reflecting on her 21 years working on the long-running ITV soap, Patrick said: 'I was lucky to be there at such extraordinary times.'
Beyond Coronation Street, Patrick worked on almost every major soap and continuing drama produced in the UK, including Emmerdale, Brookside, Holby City and EastEnders.
Early Career and Transition to Directing
Patrick began her career as an actress and appeared in the original run of Doctor Who alongside the First Doctor William Hartnell in the 1960s, before also featuring in the police procedural drama Z-Cars. Through acting, she discovered a passion for collaborating more closely with writers and transitioned into directing, honing her skills on the BBC Radio 2 soap Waggoners' Walk from 1971.
Tributes from Colleagues
Tributes poured in following the news of her death. Former Coronation Street actress Lisa George, who portrayed Beth Trinker, wrote: 'Awwww I loved Kay- worked with her quite a bit and just felt so safe in her hands. I thought she was amazing xxx.' Another friend commented: 'So saddened to hear about Kay's passing. It was an honour to know her. Such a kind, lovely lady and a cat lover to boot! Kay was so loved and respected by all who worked on Coronation Street. Rest in peace, Kay.' A third tribute simply said: 'I'm so sorry to hear about Kay. It was a pleasure to know her. Xx.'
