Jeremy Clarkson Apologises for 'Nightmare' Question on Who Wants To Be a Millionaire?
Clarkson Apologises for 'Nightmare' Millionaire Question

Jeremy Clarkson confessed 'I'm literally useless' and offered his apologies to a contestant on Who Wants To Be a Millionaire? following a 'nightmare' question. The ITV quiz show returned on Sunday (June 7) with presenter Jeremy at the helm to pose the questions as six new contestants discovered whether they possessed the 15 correct answers required to claim the top prize and depart as a millionaire.

Romell Miller's Turn

Romell Miller was the first hopeful to take the hot seat, and the student ultimately left the studio with £1,000 in his pocket after faltering on a history question. Following him was data analyst Natalie Waldegrave, who revealed she hoped to use any winnings to help get a foot on the property ladder.

Natalie's Journey

She breezed through the opening eight questions until she was forced to use her first lifeline on a question about metal. Natalie opted to 'ask the audience' and they delivered the correct answer, allowing her to press on with her game. Natalie subsequently deployed her 50/50 lifeline, but it was the £64,000 question that left her completely stumped. She asked Jeremy to set her safety net, but first needed to correctly answer a question about lakes to secure it.

The 'Nightmare' Question

The host posed the question: 'Which of these popular tourist lakes is the largest by area?' with the possible answers being Lake Windermere, Lake Garda, Lake Tahoe and Lake Titicaca. Natalie had earlier acknowledged during the programme that geography wasn't her 'strongest point' before proceeding to use her 'Ask The Host' lifeline. Jeremy subsequently informed Natalie that he was 'useless' and hadn't managed to provide her with a clear answer, saying that he 'could only apologise for the question' and acknowledging that he didn't believe 'anyone in the room or the world' could answer it.

Still lacking confidence to tackle the 'nightmare' question, Natalie opted to use her fourth and final lifeline by calling her brother Daniel, who was equally stumped.

Walking Away

Following considerable thought, Natalie chose to walk away with the £32,000 she'd accumulated, but before departing, Jeremy enquired which answer she would have selected. Natalie guessed: 'Lake Titicaca' and Jeremy revealed to the contestant that had she continued with that answer, she'd be progressing to the next round of the quiz programme and could have secured her safety net at £64,000. Nevertheless, Natalie remained pleased to be departing with £32,000 towards her dream home.

Previous Contestant Andrew Fanko

This follows contestant Andrew Fanko recently forfeiting the opportunity to claim the jackpot on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?. He reached the million pound question but chose not to answer as he couldn't be certain, and had he followed the ITV audience's suggestion, he would have been incorrect. He still departed with half a million pounds and delivered one of the finest performances in the programme's history.

Andrew breezed through the ITV show until pausing on question 12 for £125,000 regarding which cell type lacks a nucleus. He rang his friend Jonathan, who was 60 percent certain it was bacteria, and after using his 50-50 lifeline, went with this correct answer. The contestant stumbled once more on question 14 for £500,000, which asked which character is killed in Murder on the Orient Express. He attempted to seek assistance from host Jeremy, but when that proved fruitless, he correctly guessed Sam Ratchett.

Andrew's final question for £1 million required him to identify which one of four named individuals was an EGOT winner, meaning they had claimed four prestigious arts accolades including an Emmy and an Oscar. Unable to recall the answer, he turned to the audience, though the majority believed it to be Bette Midler. Having opted to walk away with £500,000 rather than risk an answer, Andrew was then revealed that the correct answer was Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? is available to watch on ITVX.
