Michael Carrick has confirmed Amad's cryptic social media post on Tuesday night was a show of support for Lisandro Martinez after his post-match interview following the defeat to Atletico Madrid.
Martinez's post-match criticism
Martinez used post-match TV interviews on Amazon Prime Video and CBS in the US to criticise the club's football leadership team and the lack of investment in the first-team squad during the summer transfer window.
The 28-year-old has since held talks with Carrick, director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada, and took to social media on Thursday to apologise for the "time and place" of his comments, but not the content.
Amad's social media post
While Martinez's comments dominated the fallout from the defeat in Spain, Amad posted a picture from the game with the words "F***ing disgrace. I have no words."
Speaking on Friday, Carrick said the post was intended as a message to back Martinez but called on Amad to use the passion and emotion in the right way, something he believes has happened after praising the quality of the training session on Friday morning.
Carrick's response
"It's a situation where there are ways of doing it, and in one way, it shows the boys care an awful lot," said Carrick.
"There is ways of doing it as part of learning a little bit, of showing that emotion, and like I've just said, I think we've just got to show that in the right manner and channel it in the right manner."
