Roy Keane has opened up about a telephone conversation he had with Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes after criticising the Portuguese playmaker. The pair recently found themselves at loggerheads following remarks made by the former United stalwart.
Keane took umbrage with the attitude of United's players after Fernandes broke the record for the most assists in a single Premier League season on the final day of the campaign against Brighton last month. This prompted Fernandes to respond to the criticism during a conversation with Steven Bartlett, and Keane has now disclosed that the two men have since spoken directly over the phone.
Keane Reveals Mature Conversation
Speaking on the latest episode of The Overlap podcast from Stick to Football, Keane said: "I think there was a reaction to what we said on the podcast a few weeks ago and he reached out to me and wanted a chat. I did, I called him and we had a lovely chat about a bit of everything really. It was nice, when we do podcasts or games and sometimes you think you say something afterward and you are trying to communicate something and it doesn't come across properly and people get upset."
He added: "He wanted to speak to me and we had a nice, mature conversation."
Background of the Dispute
The war of words began when Keane criticised Fernandes' attitude on the pitch, despite the midfielder's record-breaking assist tally. Fernandes responded publicly, leading to a direct call between the two. The resolution highlights a mutual respect, with both parties willing to clear the air.
This development comes as Manchester United prepare for the upcoming season, with Fernandes remaining a key figure in the squad. Keane's comments had sparked debate among fans, but the phone call appears to have ended any lingering tension.
