Stranger Things Creators Reveal Billy Crudup Turned Down Jim Hopper Role
Billy Crudup Passed on Hopper Role in Stranger Things

The creators of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers, have revealed that actor Billy Crudup was initially offered the role of police chief Jim Hopper before David Harbour ultimately secured the part. In a recent interview on Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused podcast, Matt Duffer shared that Crudup turned down the television role because he was not actively pursuing TV work at that time. Crudup later went on to star in Apple TV+'s Emmy-winning series The Morning Show.

After Crudup's refusal, a casting director suggested David Harbour for the part. Harbour performed a single take, which the Duffer Brothers reviewed and immediately recognised as the perfect embodiment of Hopper. The creators noted that Harbour's portrayal brought a unique depth and authenticity to the character, making him an indispensable part of the series.

Early Casting Considerations

In the original pitch deck for Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers had listed several high-profile actors as potential candidates for the lead roles. For Jim Hopper, they considered Ewan McGregor and Sam Rockwell, while for Joyce Byers, the list included Naomi Watts and Marisa Tomei. Ultimately, the casting of Harbour and Winona Ryder as Joyce Byers proved to be a defining choice for the show's success.
