Better Call Saul Star Reveals He's Now an Amazon Delivery Driver
John Christian Love, the actor best known for his role as Ernesto in the acclaimed television series Better Call Saul, has disclosed that he is currently working as a delivery driver for Amazon. This surprising career move comes after his appearance in Vince Gilligan's critically praised Breaking Bad prequel failed to serve as the launching pad for his acting ambitions that he had anticipated.
From Mailroom to Delivery Van
Love, aged 35, portrayed Ernesto, a friend and former mailroom colleague of the lawyer-turned-criminal Jimmy McGill, later known as Saul Goodman, played by Bob Odenkirk. His character appeared across the first four seasons of the Emmy-nominated drama, which aired from 2015 to 2022. Following his departure from the series—after the death of Jimmy's brother Chuck, whom Ernesto assisted as a personal assistant—Love's acting opportunities have been sparse, limited to minor roles in a few independent television productions and short films.
In a recent post on Reddit's AmazonDSPDrivers forum titled "Delivering smiles & autographs," Love shared details of his temporary career shift. "Hey it's me John Christian Love. Just want y'all to know that as the actor who brought you the character 'Ernesto/Ernie' in Better Call Saul, that I too am out here delivering with you!" he wrote, accompanied by a selfie from the driver's seat of an Amazon van and a photo of a signed picture featuring Ernesto and Jimmy.
Career Struggles and Unpaid Projects
Love expressed his frustration in the post, stating, "It sucks. But 1 delivery at a time. Be blessed out there! #IMissTheMailroom." When questioned by a commenter about whether his role in Better Call Saul was insufficient to sustain his acting career, Love responded, "I haven't given up on it, just really slow right now. And BCS wasn't the breakout I was hoping." He further revealed a setback involving a significant film project titled Lone Wolf, directed by Mark Pellington and starring Lily Gladstone and Bryan Cranston. According to Love, production was halted abruptly in July due to funding issues, leaving him and other cast members unpaid, a claim corroborated by industry reports from Deadline.
Reflecting on his time working with co-star Bob Odenkirk, Love had only positive remarks, saying, "Great guy, very hard worker, was memorizing a full episodic script every 9 days or so and then doing standup on weekends, etc... nothing bad to say." He also mentioned that he would send autographed photos to fans who provided a self-addressed stamped envelope.
Legacy of Better Call Saul
Better Call Saul, which premiered two years after the conclusion of Breaking Bad, served as an origin story for Jimmy McGill's transformation into the morally ambiguous lawyer Saul Goodman. The series featured a talented ensemble cast including Rhea Seehorn, Jonathan Banks, Patrick Fabian, Michael Mando, Giancarlo Esposito, and Kerry Condon. Despite its critical success and popularity, Love's experience highlights the unpredictable nature of the entertainment industry, where even roles in high-profile shows do not guarantee sustained career momentum.
As Love continues to navigate his dual roles as an actor and delivery driver, his story underscores the challenges many performers face in securing consistent work. The Independent has reached out to a representative for Love for additional comments, but no further statements have been provided at this time.
