Former Love Island contestant Belle Hassan has publicly addressed the controversy surrounding her behaviour on the recent All Stars series, breaking her silence on what she describes as "very dark lows" following her appearance on the ITV dating show.
Reality TV Backlash and Viewer Criticism
The 27-year-old reality star, who first gained fame on the fifth series of Love Island in 2019, participated in the third series of the popular All Stars spin-off earlier this year. During her time in the South African villa, Belle coupled with Sean Stone and Jack Keating before being eliminated alongside Harrison Solomon on day 32 of the competition.
Viewers heavily criticised Belle's conduct toward fellow contestants Lucinda Strafford and Leanne Amaning. The controversy stemmed from Belle's anger when Lucinda "stole" her partner Sean, followed by Belle's subsequent pursuit of Leanne's partner Scott van-der-Sluis.
Instagram Statement and Emotional Reflection
In a lengthy Instagram post shared with her 1.1 million followers, Belle opened up about her challenging experience on the reality programme. She wrote: "What a journey... I can't thank you enough for the love and support I've received amongst the cloud of grey. I see your messages and I'm so grateful."
"Love Island was one of the wildest journeys of my life, beautiful highs and very dark lows," she continued. "I hit breaking points, faced trauma triggers, and handled things the best way I could at the time. I'm not perfect, but I'm proud of the woman I am."
Defending Against Editing Claims
Belle directly addressed accusations that the show's editing contributed to negative perceptions of her behaviour. "Just remember, you see one hour of a 24 hour day. Context matters," she explained. "Big reactions don't happen without big reasons, and entertainment isn't always the full story."
Despite the controversy, Belle expressed gratitude for positive aspects of her experience, stating: "Despite it all, I met beautiful souls and made memories I'll treasure forever."
Live Finale Confrontation
During the live finale episode that aired last Monday, host Maya Jama questioned Belle about viewer backlash and accusations of bullying behaviour in the villa. Belle defended herself by suggesting that important context had been omitted from the broadcast.
"I think for me, watching a few things back that I have seen since, I feel like a lot hasn't been shown," Belle responded during the finale. "The good time and the other things that kind of show the reason for the upset and the anger with things."
Viewer Reactions and Accountability Questions
Many viewers remained unconvinced by Belle's explanations, with social media commentary suggesting she failed to take proper responsibility for her actions. One viewer commented: "Lol.not zeze being sooooo right on 24/7 switch up line from belle.. lazy blaming the edit strikes again."
Another critic wrote: "Also, belle, i get that we only see an hour a day but if you are completely insufferable, microaggressive, volatile, and abrasive for an entire hour everyday for a whole month...that's a reflection of your character, not the edit."
Additional commentary noted: "Belle took NO accountability again..." and "Belle said that a lot hasn't been shown but she hasn't mentioned that she apologised so we've seen enough to form a negative opinion on her."
Personal Growth and Moving Forward
In her Instagram reflection, Belle emphasized personal growth and self-acceptance despite the criticism. "I've always been told I'm a 'love her or hate her' personality... but the parts of me some don't understand are the parts I love most," she shared.
She concluded her statement with a message of empowerment: "If I've empowered even one person to stand in their truth and feel seen, that means everything to me. We are all different, we all carry different emotional trauma and no matter how you channel that you should feel validated."
The reality star, who is now in a relationship with fellow contestant Harrison Solomon, signed off with her characteristic phrase: "Ps. Sometimes you just gotta CHARGE IT."
