Sir David Beckham has achieved a major milestone by receiving his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but many fans are baffled as to why he was granted this honor. The former England footballer, aged 51, attended the ceremony in Los Angeles on Friday, June 12, accompanied by his wife Victoria, sons Romeo and Cruz, and daughter Harper. Notably absent was his estranged eldest son, Brooklyn. Hollywood star Tom Cruise also attended the special occasion.
Beckham's Emotional Speech
In his speech, David described the experience as 'truly incredible.' He said, 'I have always been a dreamer, but I could never have imagined that an honor like this would come to a working-class English soccer player like me. I grew up in the East End of London, a long way from Hollywood. As a young boy, I loved soccer more than anything, and it was all I ever wanted to do. I always loved America, though, and its TV shows.' He called Tom Cruise's presence 'mindblowing' and expressed hope that his children would 'bring my grandchildren here one day and tell them about a boy who dreamed big.'
Public Backlash
Many people have expressed confusion over why an English sportsman received a Hollywood star, as this honor is typically reserved for entertainers. On X, TheOmniFeed wrote, 'Star on the Hollywood walk of fame?? Could anyone name a role he acted please.' Kitty declared, 'This makes a mockery of any real talented stars.' Sophie shared, 'Star on the Walk of Fame doesn't mean anything anymore because anyone can have one; all they need is for people to nominate them and then pay for it themselves.' Hermionegingold asked, 'Why would an English footballer get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame?' Caitline Warwick added, 'I'm a Beckham fan, and I love the Walk of Fame, but I don't get why David is getting one?'
Supportive Voices
Others were fully in support. TeamGoldenGoddess shared, 'What a moment for David Beckham, congrats to him!' BarkJack agreed, 'Wholesome and he totally deserves it.'
Explanation from Walk of Fame Producer
Ana Martinez, Walk of Fame producer, who has previously rejected stars like Kim Kardashian, explained why David was honored, especially as it coincided with the FIFA World Cup in North America. She noted that the star costs a significant amount of money to secure. First, a nomination must be submitted in one of the categories: Motion Pictures, Television, Radio, Recording, Live Theatre/Performance, and Sports Entertainment, along with a $275 fee. Once accepted, a dedication ceremony involves an $85,000 sponsorship fee for the creation, installation, inauguration, and lifetime maintenance of the star.
Recognized under the Sports Entertainment category, Ana said, 'Beckham's role in elevating soccer's profile in America and his lasting influence on sports, entertainment, and global culture make this honor especially meaningful.' She also pointed to his entertainment career as founder of Studio 99, which produced documentary features and series, including the Netflix hit 'Beckham' and a series about his wife. Additionally, he has a strategic partnership with Authentic, the world's biggest sports and entertainment licensing company.
Other Sports Stars on the Walk of Fame
In Sports Entertainment, Beckham joins tennis star Billie Jean King and actor-sports figure Carl Weathers. Other sports stars in different categories include boxer Muhammad Ali, basketball player Magic Johnson, and swimmer Esther Williams.
Victoria Beckham's Tribute
In a follow-up speech, his wife, the Spice Girls icon, said, 'David, I am so proud of everything you have achieved so far, but even more proud of the husband, father and person that you have always been.'
It has been a significant couple of years for David, who also received a long-awaited Knighthood from King Charles III in November last year.
