BBC viewers devastated as Frankie McCamley announces departure

BBC viewers were left devastated after presenter Frankie McCamley announced she is leaving the broadcaster after a decade, also revealing plans to move out of London. The journalist, known for reporting on BBC News and fronting the Panorama documentary What Happened to Our Boys? about knife crime, shared the news in an emotional post on social media.

Emotional farewell

In a heartfelt message posted on Wednesday, June 10, McCamley wrote alongside a photo of herself at the newsdesk: "It's nearly time to say goodbye to a huge chapter in my life. Leaving the BBC & London wasn't an easy decision." She expressed gratitude to those who trusted her to tell their stories and for the opportunities she received, adding: "Now for a new challenge."

Overwhelming support

The announcement prompted an influx of supportive messages from her 9,778 followers. One commented: "Frankie, such disappointing news, from my perspective, best BBC London presenter by miles. Thrilled 4 u though, please let us know where u r going, I may have to move!!!" Another wrote: "Will miss seeing a familiar face on screen when I look up. Good luck with new endeavours, Frankie." A third added: "Sorry to hear the news. Your smile and cheerfulness always light up the London News. Change is always good though. Wishing you every success and luck for the future." A fourth viewer from the USA said: "Sorry to hear that big fan here across the pond in USA. Good luck in your new adventure. Hopefully we'll find out soon. Have a great one."

Future plans unclear

McCamley did not disclose her next venture but urged viewers to stay tuned for updates. Her departure comes amid significant changes at the BBC, including plans to cut up to 2,000 jobs as part of a £600m cost-saving initiative, the largest downsizing in 15 years. In April, staff were informed that about 10% of the corporation's 21,500 employees would be affected, with news operations facing deeper cuts. The development also follows the appointment of Matt Brittin, former top Google executive, as the new director general from May 18.
