BBC Breakfast viewers were left less than impressed during a live segment from the Wimbledon queue on Friday, July 10, as sports presenter Mike Bushell reported on the atmosphere ahead of the men's semi-finals.
Viewers React to 'Cringeworthy' Queue Antics
Hosts Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt were back on the red sofa to deliver the day's headlines before catching up with Bushell, who was reporting live from the queue outside the All England Club. Behind him, crowds could be seen enthusiastically dancing with flags at 6:30am, while others played tennis.
Many viewers took to social media to express their frustration. One person wrote on X: 'I wonder how many Wimbledon fans said no. Those 8 flag wavers looked too enthusiastic.' Another added: 'Can you play tennis in the background while Bushell is doing the sports news? But we're s*** at tennis. Doesn't matter.'
A third commented: 'Imagine waiting in the queue and they [are] pratting about with the bat and ball.' Others simply said: 'Cringe!!!' with one comparing the scene to Glastonbury: 'Wimbledon? Looks like f****** Glastonbury.'
Bushell Reports on Arthur Fery's Semifinal
Bushell was reporting ahead of British wildcard Arthur Fery's men's semi-final match against number two seed Alexander Zverev on Centre Court. Later, top seed Jannik Sinner was set to face 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic.
Referring to the queue, Bushell said: 'Look at them all! Despite people not having a sleep last night, apparently there were some Olympic snorers around, look at the spirits everyone is in as they pack their tents away, trying to get up there on Arthur's Seat.'
However, viewers remained unimpressed. One frustrated fan wrote: 'What are they doing behind Bushell. Desperate for the lavo or something.' Another added: 'Half 6 in the morning, I'm getting ready for a hot day toiling at work and I'm watching them dancing about getting ready to watch Tennis! Life is Not Fair!'
Criticism of Segment's Purpose
Some questioned the purpose of the segment entirely. One viewer said: 'Why didn't these people dancing in a field with union jack bunting at 06:30 just say no they didn't want to embarrass themselves live on TV when #BBCBreakfast asked them to do it?' Another similarly shared: 'Cringeworthy it's like they need to find him something to do! Absolutely no point to that segment (as usual).'
Elsewhere on the show, Naga and Charlie revealed that the Bayeux Tapestry had arrived in the UK and announced the death of former MP Ann Widdicombe.
