The Great British Bake Off paid tribute to contestant Nikki and her family after she left the tent during Bread Week following the death of her mother Joyce.
On Tuesday, 13 October, the amateur bakers took part in Bread Week, guided by presenters Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding and judges Paul Hollywood and Nigella Lawson, who has taken over from Dame Prue Leith.
Shortly after completing her Signature Challenge, Nikki had to leave the tent, with Alison explaining that she had exited due to family matters. Alison later told the judges: "It's a shame she's not going to be here for the Showstopper."
Dedication to Nikki's mother
Paul also said: "We'd like to see Nikki come back so we need to leave some space, but I think at least one person will be leaving today anyway."
While Nikki did not return for the Showstopper Challenge, the programme concluded with a dedication to her mother. Accompanied by a photograph of the two together, the Channel 4 programme declared: "With our deepest condolences to Nikki and family following the loss of her mum Joyce."
Support from fans and co-stars
Viewers rushed to share their support for Nikki, with one writing: "Oh no, poor Nikki." Another said: "Aww condolences to Nikki and family." Another wrote: "Thoughts are with Nikki and her family at this difficult time."
Yet another said: "Condolences to Nikki! So sad!!!" Someone else echoed: "Awwww Nikki I am so sorry." One fan added: "Love and hugs to Nikki."
Nikki also shared on social media: "This is a sad and bittersweet post to write. My beautiful Mama Joycey passed away earlier this year.
"This is the reason I had to leave the Bake Off tent — to come home and be with my beautiful mum in her final days. Mama deteriorated quite quickly over a short period of time, and none of us were prepared for how quickly things would change."
Her co-stars flooded the comments with their support, as Molly said: "We love you so much Nikki, sending you and the family so much love."
Clara wrote: "Tent was never the same without you. Love you Nikki, we are here for you as family." The Bake Off page also commented: "Sending so much love to you and all your family Nikki."
Molly eliminated from the competition
Meanwhile, baker Molly was the third contestant eliminated this series, and she discussed her departure following the announcement that she would be leaving the competition.
She emotionally stated: "I'm sad to be leaving the tent, but yeah, I think it's my time and I think it's the right decision." She told her fellow contestants: "I would feel guilty if I stayed any longer with you guys, you've got more to prove."
She continued: "I really wanted to do Biscuit Week and Bread Week, and I've done Biscuit Week and Bread Week. And I've got to cook with my husband in the tent! It's been a really wonderful experience, and I'm really proud of myself."
The Great British Bake Off continues Tuesdays at 8pm on Channel 4.
