Arthur Fery's Tennis Legacy: Superstar Mum, Wealthy Dad, and Cliff-Jumping Past
Arthur Fery's Tennis Legacy: Superstar Mum, Wealthy Dad

Arthur Fery, a 23-year-old British wildcard, has captivated the nation by storming into the Wimbledon semi-finals after a sensational victory over former world No. 3 Grigor Dimitrov. Tennis runs deep in his family: his French mother, Olivia Fery, was a professional player who competed in the doubles draw at the 1991 French Open and reached a singles ranking of 225, later winning a national championship in Hong Kong before moving into business development for the Lawn Tennis Association.

Family Background and Upbringing

Fery's father, Loïc Fery, is a French businessman and hedge fund manager who owns French football club Lorient. Through his investment firm Chenavari, he has amassed a fortune estimated at £275 million, making him one of the wealthiest men in France. Arthur is the eldest of three siblings, alongside Albane and Maxime. The family spent childhood summers in France, either with relatives in Nice or at a second home near La Rochelle.

Early Tennis Development

Growing up within walking distance of Wimbledon, Fery attended King's College in Wimbledon, where tuition fees reach up to £11,940 per term. He represented France at under-12 level briefly. "I was never really pushed to play tennis, but my mum was a professional player – she was very good, that encouraged me," Arthur explained. "She helped me get going. We had a club just up the hill from Wimbledon called Westside – 50 metres from our house."

Cliff-Jumping and Parental Concerns

At 15, Fery took up cliff-jumping to hone his mental strength, but his parents pleaded with him to stop. "I don't feel like I'm a massive risk taker in terms of my personality. I quite like control in what I'm doing. But I did use those kinds of things [cliff-jumping] to work on losing the fear," he told The Telegraph. "Especially now when I'm trying to make a career out of professional sports, it's not the smartest thing to do."

Education and Path to Professional Tennis

Despite his privileged background, Fery's parents encouraged him to stay in school and complete his A-levels. He didn't turn professional until age 18, instead attending Stanford University on a scholarship, where he majored in science, technology and society. He became the top-ranked college player in the country. "I'm really lucky in that regard. I had two parents who are highly driven, very successful in different aspects, but they've always taught me to be humble, to stay grounded and work really hard at whatever I do," he said.

Personal Life and Current Status

Fery has been linked to culinary content creator Honor Millard, known as "The Honorable Chef," but his agent has confirmed he does not currently have a girlfriend. As he prepares to face French Open champion Alexander Zverev for a place in Sunday's final, his focus remains on the court.
