Beloved singer Alex Bueno died at the age of 62 in New York City on Thursday, June 18. The news was confirmed by his representatives in a post on the star's official Instagram page. Alongside a black and white image of Alex wearing a tuxedo emblazoned with the dates of his birth and death, they wrote: "With our deepest sorrow and utmost respect, we announce the passing of our beloved Alex Bueno on June 18th in New York City at 9:43 a.m. His departure leaves an irreplaceable void in the art world and in the hearts of all who had the honour of knowing him and admiring his musical work. While no cause of death has been confirmed, the star, who first found fame in the early 1980s and built a successful career in merengue, bachata, salsa and bolero, had been battling cancer. In September 2025, he was hospitalised after a hypoglycemic episode, which was initially linked to exhaustion due to his demanding performance schedule. Further tests revealed a brain tumour which was surgically removed.
He had suffered serious health issues in recent weeks. The day before his death, a heartbreaking update was posted to his Instagram explaining: "...In September 2025, a small brain tumour was detected. The surgical procedure to remove it was successful, preventing further complications. Due to the discovery of cancerous cells in the lesion, Alex immediately began preventative treatment, progressing fully and without any neurological aftereffects. Subsequently, during follow-up studies, cancerous cells were identified in other areas of his body. His condition was progressing positively until three weeks ago, when he experienced a significant drop in his sodium and blood pressure levels, leading to severe physical decline and a complication in his clinical picture. [He] is currently in the intensive care unit, where he is receiving specialised medical care (he is not intubated)..."
Tributes flooded in for the star as fans learned of his death. Reacting to the Instagram post announcing the news, one person penned: "My condolences to your loved ones, what a great loss. We will miss you so much, namesake. We will always keep your legacy alive." Another added: "Alex, brother, the sparrow sings and flies. You flew to God to bring Him your beautiful voice and thank Him for all He gave you in life. Your voice and your music are your earthly gift to those of us who loved and admired you... Rest in peace, dear friend." A third chimed in: "Go with God, my dear Alex Bueno. You left us a good legacy, your beautiful music, to always carry and remember and listen to your beautiful songs." Meanwhile, a fourth shared: "Alex, your music and your memory in our hearts as the great artist you are (it stays in our hearts). Special people like you are not forgotten."
