The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has released the most popular baby names in the UK based on last year's birth registrations, revealing that vintage names like Marnie are making a comeback. Olivia remains the top name for girls, followed by Lily and Amelia. For boys, Muhammad holds the top spot for the third consecutive year.
New entries in the top 100
Several new names have entered the top 100 for the first time, including Marnie, Eliana, Gracie, Anaya, Alba, Lilah, and Frankie for girls. For boys, Vincent, Carter, Stanley, and Ruben are new additions.
Marnie originated as a diminutive of Margaret and gained popularity in 1964 after Alfred Hitchcock's film Marnie. Despite being considered vintage, many parents are now choosing this nostalgic name.
Parent reactions on Mumsnet
Parents on the parenting forum Mumsnet shared mixed views. One said: "It's a nice choice, but if it was me, I would use Marina, Maren, Maria, Margaret, and use Marnie as the nickname." Another noted: "I had always thought it was an old lady name - every old lady seems to be called Margaret." A third commented: "My nana is called Margaret too, and I'd love to use her name for a little girl. For me, it's a bit too old-fashioned, but I'd use Maggie or Peggy."
