Will Young has announced an Evergreen 25th anniversary tour, which will include a date at Newcastle's O2 City Hall on February 21. The tour marks a quarter of a century since the singer won Pop Idol and reached number 1 with his debut single, which sold over a million copies.
Pop Idol victory remembered
In spring 2002, millions of viewers voted by house phone and Nokia 3310 as the nation chose between Will and fellow finalist Gareth Gates in one of reality TV's most historic battles. Will, who famously challenged Simon Cowell for calling him 'average,' triumphed over bookies' favourite Gareth and entered the charts at number 1 with his winner's song, Evergreen.
Tour dates and tickets
The tour will kick off at the Apollo in Manchester on February 20 before heading to Newcastle the following day. Announcing the tour on Monday, Will, who also had number 1s with Light My Fire and Leave Right Now, said: 'To reach 25 years is a privilege and an honour. Who knew entering a competition by cutting out a piece from the newspaper would lead to the most exciting 20 weeks of my life in Pop Idol and a relationship with the public that has lasted for so long. People voted and trusted me and that has forever been a dream come true.'
Tickets for all dates, including Newcastle, go on sale at 10am on Friday, October 2, from sites including Ticketmaster. Pre-sale sign-ups are available via Will's website, beginning on September 30.
