In response to Nadia Khomami's article on phone use in theatres (6 June) and Rosamund Pike's lecture from the stage (1 June), while I agree with the general sentiment, I would like to offer a word of caution. Some of us wear hearing aids that are controlled via Bluetooth. Occasionally, we need to adjust the settings to properly hear what is happening on stage. From the vantage point of the stage, it probably looks as though we are texting. Actors would need the eyesight of a sparrowhawk to tell the difference. Meanwhile, I am dialling up assistance to aid full immersion in the experience.

Dog house
Should your dog have its own bedroom, your article asks (7 June). Is this a joke? My dog has her own house! She does, very kindly, let me stay here, too, on condition that I do all the food preparation and cleaning, and do not use her three-quarters share of the sofa.

Nicola Sturgeon's salt and pepper grinders
To be fair to the former Scottish first minister Nicola Sturgeon (31 June), if my husband came home with those Lalique salt and pepper grinders, I would assume he had got them in a charity shop.

Nine times table
The letters discussing ways of computing the nine times table (4 June) are fun and interesting but, of course, for nine, it only works in base 10. The mathematical questions are: why does it work and would it work in other number bases?

Triggered by maths
I failed my maths O-level five times. Please, all this nine times table stuff is very triggering.
