Alex Burman, a Welshman from South Wales, is among the seven contestants in BBC's new competition Race Against the Tide. The show, hosted by Love Island's Iain Stirling, features seven teams of two – a professional sand sculptor and a newcomer – racing to build spectacular sand sculptures before the tide washes them away.
Competition format
Each duo has just six hours to transform tonnes of sand into themed creations, battling the clock, the weather, and each other. The sculptures are judged by artist and sculptor Sadie Clayton and internationally renowned sand sculptor Jamie Wardley.
At the end of every challenge, one team earns the title of Sand Champions, while another pair must leave the beach after failing to impress. After six builds, only one team will be crowned the first-ever Race Against the Tide champions.
Alex's background and skills
Alex, nicknamed Valley Viking, is a carpenter by trade, a skill that has earned him a large online following. He believes his craft could help him in the competition. He is teamed with professional Rémy Hoggard.
Speaking about joining the series, Alex said: "I believe this show couldn’t have come at a better time. I feel that most people in the UK love the beach on a warm sunny day (when we actually do get sun) and I think this show will inspire many to make more use of our beaches and get outdoors."
On his Instagram following, which is nearly at 50,000 people, he said: "I’ve been on social media for over 6 years showing my craft with carpentry and building, but now I get to show people that my hand skills aren’t just for wood."
Representing Wales
Alex is proud to be representing Wales on the show. He said: "Also I’m the only Welsh person on the show so I’m representing Wales which is a huge plus for me!"
Race Against the Tide is the first UK adaptation of the hit format created by Blue Ant Studios, originally produced for CBC in Canada. The show launches on BBC Scotland on Monday, August 17 at 8:30pm and on BBC Two on Tuesday, August 18 at 7:30pm. All episodes will be available on BBC iPlayer from August 17.
