The family of a 13-year-old schoolgirl who died after going missing in a Yorkshire river have paid tribute to a 'bright, kind, and caring' teenager. Palwasha Akbar, from Bradford, was pulled from the River Wharfe near Burnsall in the Yorkshire Dales on Sunday, May 31. Despite rescue efforts by members of the public and medical staff, she died shortly after being taken to hospital by air ambulance.
Family's heartfelt tribute
Palwasha's family described her as a 'bright, kind, and caring 13-year-old girl whose tragic passing has left her family, friends, school, and community heartbroken.' They added: 'Palwasha loved reading, spending time with her friends, and bringing happiness to those around her. She was a hardworking student with a warm smile, a gentle nature, and a caring heart. She had a bright future ahead of her and touched the lives of so many people through her kindness and positivity.'
In her memory, the family launched a GoFundMe appeal to support charitable causes reflecting her values of kindness, compassion, and helping others. They hope to create something positive and lasting in her name.
School's tribute
Palwasha was a Year 9 pupil at Bronte Girls’ Secondary Academy. Acting principal Lyndsay Hall said: 'We are deeply saddened by the death of one of our much-loved students in a swimming accident. She was a valued and much-loved member of the school community. She was one of our star pupils and will be remembered for her compassion and willingness to go above and beyond to help others.'
An inquest into her death is expected to open at Northallerton coroner’s court on June 18.
