Lucy Davis, best known for playing Dawn Tinsley in the BBC sitcom The Office, has revealed she has been diagnosed with stage four breast cancer, which she described as “incurable”.
Diagnosis and Spread
The 53-year-old actress shared the news on Instagram on Tuesday (11 August), explaining that she was told about the diagnosis around 18 months ago after finding a “really tiny” hard spot in her breast. The cancer has since spread to her bones, including her spine, right hip, and ribs.
Treatment and Outlook
In a video posted alongside her message, Davis is seen smiling and ringing a bell in hospital to mark the end of treatment. However, she wrote in the caption: “the cancer is incurable, and too late for chemo”. She added: “As of now, I’m trying to live out whatever might be left of my life in as fun a way as I possibly can.”
Davis, who is the daughter of comedian Jasper Carrott, wrote that pain has been the hardest part, sometimes requiring a wheelchair. She emphasised the importance of humour, asking friends and family “to make fun of me as much as possible” and “to not treat me like a sick person”. She also expressed peace with her situation, saying: “I’m not scared of whatever comes next... For me, leaving my physical body just means going home.”
Career and Future Plans
Beyond The Office and Shaun of the Dead, Davis appeared in Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and the Disney Channel series The Villains of Valley View. She wrote that she intends to continue acting and keep up her work for animal rights.
