Alan Shearer has been granted a star on Betfair's newly launched 'Walk of Shame' on Wembley Way outside the national stadium for one of his worst football opinions. However, his claim that Newcastle United would beat Sunderland in both of last season's Tyne-Wear derbies - before they lost each game - does not make the top five of worst football opinions of all time.
The ranking is based on research conducted with YouGov, which polled 2,008 adult fans across Great Britain. Alan Hansen and Roy Keane, however, do feature. Two of the takes are about Erling Haaland, with content creators included as well.
Hansen and Keane feature in top five
Number five is Hansen's infamous phrase, "You can't win anything with kids". It was uttered on Match of the Day about Manchester United after Sir Alex Ferguson's young side lost 3-1 against Aston Villa on the opening day of the 1995/96 season.
Despite having an average age of 26 years and 137 days - when considering players who made 10 or more appearances - they won the Premier League and FA Cup double. They were the youngest to do so for almost a decade, until Jose Mourinho's first Chelsea team won the title with an average age of 25 years and 312 days.
Coming in at four is 'Rory Talks Football', an Arsenal supporter who said last year that the Gunners "finishing second was a better achievement than Leicester City winning the league". The Gunners were not 5000/1 with bookmakers to come second when they achieved that 'feat', that is for sure.
Haaland takes and content creators top the list
Third is where Keane fell for when he said Haaland is "almost like a League Two player". He made the comparison two years ago after a 0-0 draw between Arsenal and Manchester City. However, it is worth noting that the pundit drew those parallels when discussing his poor general play. In the same breath, he said that "in front of the goal, he's the best in the world".
The top two are reserved for content creators, with Man United fan 'Humzy' in second for saying last year that "Ruben Amorim's legacy at Man United will be greater than Pep Guardiola's at Man City". Rory Jennings takes top spot for simply saying in 2022 that "Haaland will flop in the Premier League".
Shearer hopes prediction was early, not wrong
Shearer may not have made the top five, but is still holding out hope that his prediction about Sunderland struggling was just early rather than wrong. The Betfair ambassador said: "What fool said that? Let's hope I was just 12 months early in my prediction.
It will be a more challenging season for Sunderland this year than it was last year. I do think it will be tougher times for Newcastle as well, and we'll have to be patient, so let's wait and see. We all think we know what's going to happen. But even the best of us can completely miss the mark."
