Lawrence Shankland and Ché Adams combined excellently against Bolivia, scoring three of Scotland’s four goals in a friendly win that has brightened the team’s outlook ahead of the World Cup opener against Haiti. The victory, which followed a 4-0 win over Curaçao, has given Steve Clarke’s side a much-needed confidence boost after a poor run of form leading into Euro 2024.
Strike Partnership Flourishes
Shankland, who recently moved to Rangers, expressed his delight at the partnership with Adams. “We’ve been working well together in training, and it showed on the pitch,” he said. The duo’s understanding has given Clarke a selection headache, but one he will welcome. With eight goals in two friendlies, Scotland’s attacking prowess looks formidable.
Shankland’s Determination
Despite his goals, Shankland remains focused on improvement. “I was disappointed not to score a fifth from Kieran Tierney’s chance,” he admitted. The striker also stressed the importance of squad unity, describing a “club feel” within the camp. “We have a great togetherness, and that’s been key for us over the years.”
Defensive and Midfield Decisions
Clarke faces key decisions in defense and midfield. Aaron Hickey and Andy Robertson are expected to start as full-backs against Haiti, while Grant Hanley and Jack Hendry appear to be the preferred central defensive partnership. In midfield, Scott McTominay is a certainty, but the manager must choose from Ryan Christie, John McGinn, Lewis Ferguson, and Ben Gannon-Doak for the remaining spots.
Shankland’s Mindset
Shankland acknowledged the competitive nature of the squad. “I’ve been on the other side, disappointed not to play. But you have to be ready when called upon. The excitement for the World Cup is brilliant, especially since it’s been so long since Scotland last qualified.”
Scotland will continue their preparation in Charlotte before heading to Boston for the tournament opener. With a clear picture emerging, Clarke’s side looks set to make an impact.
