Schar: Howe exit a 'shame' but I trust new era

Fabian Schar has described Eddie Howe's exit as Newcastle United head coach as a 'shame', revealing the close relationship of 'trust' he built with the former Magpies boss. The 34-year-old defender, however, insists he has 'great confidence' in the club's young signings and new head coach Matthias Jaissle.

Howe's Legacy and Schar's Role

Howe left his role at the end of last month, ending one of the most successful four-and-a-half-year periods in the club's history. Under his guidance, Newcastle qualified for the Champions League twice, reached two cup finals, and ended a 56-year major trophy drought by winning the Carabao Cup in 2025.

Schar played a major role in that success. Howe pushed for the former Swiss international to extend his stay at St James' Park for another season at the end of last term. Schar is now set to enter his ninth season as a Newcastle player, becoming one of the most experienced constants in a squad undergoing significant change.

Squad Changes and New Leadership

Club captain Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, and Anthony Gordon have been sold to Arsenal, Tottenham, and Barcelona respectively. Club legend Kieran Trippier also departed on a free transfer.

Despite the upheaval, Schar remains optimistic. "I've worked with no other coach for longer in my career than with Eddie," he told Swiss publication Blick. "We built a solid foundation of trust. It's a shame he left. He put his faith in me. We also held each other in high regard outside of sports. That's how it goes in football. Teams change. It's always been that way and will remain so. I have great confidence in us."

Return from Injury

Schar returned to action during pre-season after six months out with an ankle injury. He expressed gratitude for being fit and available again. "First and foremost, I'm grateful to be completely healthy again. I know I don't have another ten years of soccer ahead of me," he added.

"I enjoy being on the field, in the locker room and walking into our stadium. At the start of a career, you always set big goals for yourself, talking about titles and goals. I'm at a point where what matters most to me is enjoying the whole experience, if I can do that, further successes will follow."
