As students across the UK receive their A-level results on Thursday, August 14, attention turns to how members of the Royal Family performed in their own exams. From Prince William's mixed grades to Princess Eugenie's top marks, the results have varied over the years.
Prince William's A-level results
The Prince of Wales attended Eton College in 1995 after being educated at independent schools. In 2000, he received an A in geography, a B in art, and a C in biology. After a gap year that included army training in Belize and a visit to Africa, he began studying History of Art at St Andrews University in Scotland, where he met his future wife, Kate Middleton. He later switched to geography and achieved an upper second class honours in 2005.
Prince Harry and Kate Middleton
Prince Harry, also educated at Eton, achieved a B in art and a D in geography in 2003. His father, then Prince Charles, said in a statement on the royal website: "I am very proud of Harry. He has worked hard for these examinations and I am very pleased with today's results." Harry chose not to attend university, instead joining the army after a gap year in Australia, Africa, and Argentina. He now works as Chief Impact Officer at BetterUp, runs the Archewell Foundation, and serves as founder of the Invictus Games Foundation.
Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, attended an independent boarding school in Wiltshire and received As in maths and art, and a B in English. She took a gap year before studying History of Art at St Andrews, where she earned a 2:1.
Meghan Markle and other royals
Meghan Markle, being American, did not take A-levels. She was privately educated at Immaculate Heart High School and later earned a bachelor's degree in Theatre and International Studies from Northwestern University in 2003.
Princess Eugenie achieved the best A-level results among the royals, with two As in art and English Literature, and a B in history of art. Her sister, Princess Beatrice, received an A in drama and Bs in history and film studies. Beatrice went on to get a 2:1 from Goldsmith's in History of Ideas, while Eugenie studied English Literature, History of Art and Politics at Newcastle, graduating with a 2:1 in 2012.
King Charles left Gordonstoun school with five O-levels and two A-levels - a B in history and a C in French - before achieving a 2:2 in History at Cambridge University. Lady Louise Windsor received her A-level results in 2022, studying English, history, politics, and drama. While Buckingham Palace did not reveal her grades, she followed in her cousin's footsteps and studied at St Andrews, where standard entry grades are AAA and minimum entry grades for English are ABB. She graduated in July this year, with the Royal Family posting images from her graduation on social media, writing: "Congratulations to Lady Louise on her graduation from St Andrews University! Lady Louise was joined by her parents, The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, as they celebrated the end of her degree."
