Robson Green unveils first look at new crime drama with co-star

Robson Green has given fans a first look at his upcoming BBC crime drama The Northumbria Mysteries, which is set to premiere on BBC One on Friday, 23 October. The series follows the partnership between "Jack-of-all-trades Joe Ruby and ice-cool DI Rose O'Connell".

Robson, who departed ITV's Grantchester this summer, leads the cast alongside Call The Midwife star Liz White.

First Look at Joe and Rose

In an update shared on Thursday (8 October), Robson treated fans to a first glimpse of the characters Joe and Rose. "So proud to be part of this new series set against the stunning, dramatic and spiritual backdrop of Northumberland," he wrote in the caption. "An absolute joy and privilege to be working alongside the amazing @lizwhite2021 and the gorgeous @trogram as well as an outstanding production team from @lonesomepinetv".

Robson hinted there was "more to follow," while staying coy on further details. Shortly after posting, the Weekend Escapes star was flooded with comments from fans.

Fan Reactions and First Episode Synopsis

"Looking forward to this," wrote one. "So excited, my favourite actor is in a new show. Plus Liz White is fabulous!" added a second. "Can't wait. Anything Robson Green is in is fantastic," raved a third, while a fourth remarked, "I wondered how they'd replace the Vera series!"

Ahead of the season one premiere, the BBC has released a brief synopsis for the first episode. It reads: "When a monk is found dead at the priory where he volunteers, ex-con Joe Ruby finds himself investigating the murder alongside the brilliant DI Rose O'Connell."

What to Expect from the Series

Earlier this year, Robson confirmed on Instagram that The Northumbria Mysteries was set to begin filming. He explained: "It's about two people who are polar opposites of each other but who want to change. Joe has so many regrets and is seeking redemption, while Rose has always done the 'right' thing, but not always had the best outcomes.

"They want to make a difference in different ways. One wants to become more spiritual, the other wants to become more meaningful. They don't expect that they can help each other in their separate journeys. They come from completely different worlds. They both have good hearts, but bad habits, and they are at a time in life where they are ready to think outside the box to make a difference. So when they unexpectedly find a connection in solving a mysterious murder, it takes them ages to realise what that connection is! And then even longer to work out what to do about it.

Robson concluded: "It's a show for everyone who's ever made mistakes, but who hasn't given up just yet! And just when you, as the audience, think you've solved the crime, you haven't."
