Refugee Week Events Cancelled by Merseyside Reform UK Council
Refugee Week Events Cancelled by Merseyside Reform UK

The newly elected Reform UK-led St Helens Council has cancelled the town's planned Refugee Week events, scheduled for June 15 to 21. The council is withdrawing all financial support for the initiative and demanding that any funds already spent on the event be returned.

Council's Decision Sparks Controversy

Reform UK recently assumed control of St Helens Council after a major victory in the local elections, reducing the previous Labour administration to just two seats. Council Leader Cllr George Woodward stated that the previous administration had set aside £60,000 for the event, which he deemed an inappropriate use of council resources given what he termed the 'illegal immigration emergency.'

It is important to note that refugees are legally distinct from illegal immigrants, as they are individuals who have fled war or persecution and been granted legal status to stay.

Community Reaction

Emma Bamber, project manager at the local Café Laziz—which assists refugees and helps them integrate—shared that her 'heart was broken' by the sudden cancellation. The cancellation halts the 'World Street Eats' festival, a centerpiece event that featured international food, music, and art to connect the local community with refugees.

Despite the loss of council backing, Café Laziz and the St Helens Minster have vowed to continue their work supporting refugees and making them feel welcome in the town.
