Rangers ratings: Penrice shines in first McInnes win

Derek McInnes finally secured his first win as Rangers boss at the fifth attempt as his side cruised into the Premier Sports Cup quarter-finals with a 5-1 victory over holders St Mirren at Ibrox.

Goals from Ryan Naderi, Vanja Dragojevic, Djeidi Gassama, debutant James Penrice and substitute Ross McCausland sealed the win. Chris Mochrie's stunning strike briefly reduced the deficit to 2-1, but Rangers' first home victory since April was never seriously threatened.

Standout Performances

James Penrice, making his debut after joining from Hearts, impressed with his tenacious tackling and forward intent before scoring and assisting after the break. Vanja Dragojevic, starting in his preferred central midfield role, lashed home a 25-yard strike for Rangers' second but was at fault for St Mirren's goal with a loose pass.

Ivor Pandur was largely untroubled in goal, saving Killian Phillips' penalty after a retake was ordered. Dujon Sterling showed why he remains the best right-back option when fit, while Olwethu Makhanya delivered a composed display at the back.

Areas of Concern

Manny Fernandez was booked and conceded a late penalty, with his form a lingering worry. Nico Raskin, captaining the side in Lawrence Shankland's absence, showed mixed moments, while Daisuke Yokota failed to finish another game after being replaced at half-time.

Ryan Naderi, poor in midweek, started nervously but his early goal proved a confidence booster. Djeidi Gassama was lively but wasteful, hitting the crossbar before finally scoring after the break.

Substitutes Make an Impact

Ross McCausland marked a rare appearance with a goal, while Lawrence Shankland hit the post after coming on. Findlay Curtis had a hand in the third goal, and Dan Neil helped control the closing stages with timely interceptions.
