The 28th Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards with P&O Cruises is taking place tonight, honouring the achievements of the UK's real-life heroes. The star-studded ceremony, hosted by Carol Vorderman and Ashley Banjo, celebrates winners chosen across nine categories by a judging panel following tens of thousands of public nominations.
Red carpet hosts Sam Thompson and Pete Wicks will begin proceedings at 7.30pm, before Vorderman and Banjo present the main ceremony. GK Barry will also be on the carpet, speaking with this year's winners and celebrities as they arrive at the luxury venue.
Prime Minister Praises Award Winners
Writing for the Mirror ahead of the ceremony, Prime Minister Andy Burnham said: "There are moments when a stranger's courage saves a life, when an act of kindness pulls someone back from despair, when the extraordinary goodness of ordinary people makes your heart ache with pride."
He highlighted Dr Eli Prior, who helped others despite suffering terrible injuries in a train crash, Andrew Franks, who confronted a knife-wielding terrorist to protect worshippers, and heart surgeon Asif Hasan, whose skill has given hundreds of desperately ill children the chance to grow up.
Winners to Be Celebrated on ITV1
The ceremony will be screened on ITV1 on Thursday at 8pm as a two-hour special. The broadcast will feature the winners, including Gregor Corse, who has raised £80,000 for charity through inspirational walking challenges.
Past years have seen royalty, world leaders, music legends, sporting icons, Hollywood stars and TV favourites attend the event, with this year's ceremony continuing that tradition.
