Prince Harry made a surprise appearance in New York City yesterday, returning to the US just weeks after moving back to the UK. He appeared at the Clinton Global Initiative 2026 Annual Meeting on Wednesday, where he took to the stage to give a speech on the dangers of AI.
Emotional warning on AI risks
Harry appeared emotional as he described the dangers AI poses to children and parents, and insisted that governments must not delay while the technology becomes more autonomous. The father-of-two said, "Even the people building these systems are warning us about what happens if capability outruns safety and human control."
He added: "The damage was already done to a generation of children and parents. We do not have years for what comes next." Pictures of children who had lost their lives over the effects of social media were seen on the screen behind the royal, with Harry seen looking around at them during his speech.
Technical glitch and London appearance
The royal then experienced a technical malfunction during a speech but ultimately laughed it off. During his speech, the royal sounded choked up and turned to the awards' host, Gaby Roslin, and said, laughing: "It's happening again." She moved closer to Harry, held his arm and told him, "I am always, here," to which Harry told her, in front of the audience at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London: "That doesn't help - it makes it worse!"
His latest appearance in the US comes just days after Harry stepped out in London to give his annual speech at the WellChild awards, a charity that he has been a patron of for 18 years.
Further engagements in NYC
Harry also took to the mic on Wednesday for Travlyst. He met with partners and leaders across the sector, including EU Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas, at an exclusive private reception. He also appeared on a panel for The Diana Award today on his second day in New York City.
