In a hands-on comparison of three popular oven cleaning methods, Oven Pride Complete Oven Cleaner emerged as the most effective, leaving an oven looking as good as new after an overnight soak. The test, carried out by a home cook across two ovens, pitted Oven Pride against Elbow Grease Oven Cleaner and white vinegar, with each product performing markedly differently.
Elbow Grease Oven Cleaner: racks spotless, interior lacking
The Elbow Grease Oven Cleaner, which costs approximately £2 from Home Bargains, comes as a kit with a fume-free formula. Wearing gloves, the racks were placed in the supplied bag with two-thirds of the cleaner, sealed and left for two hours, then tilted to recoat and soaked for another four hours — though leaving it overnight gave optimal results.
The remaining liquid was applied to the oven interior and left for four hours before scrubbing and rinsing with hot soapy water. The racks came out remarkably spotless, but the interior left something to be desired: the product had a potent smell, and a considerable amount of baked-on grease remained stubbornly inside the oven.
White vinegar: little impact on stubborn grime
White vinegar, a budget-friendly staple in the cleaning cupboard, was sprayed diluted throughout the oven, left for an hour and scrubbed vigorously. It shifted a negligible amount of grease on the glass, but most of the staining persisted. While it might suit a light refresh or routine upkeep, it lacked the strength required for a thorough deep clean.
Oven Pride: fastest and most effective
Oven Pride Complete Oven Cleaner, picked up for £3.45 from B&M, uses a broadly similar approach: racks soak in a bag, and the remaining liquid is poured directly into the oven. It worked considerably faster, visibly dissolving marks both inside the oven and on the glass door.
Left to work overnight, though it could have been wiped away much sooner, the oven looked as good as new, with stubborn, baked-on residue completely vanishing. Although slightly pricier than the other two products, it was worth every penny and saved a tremendous amount of time and effort.
