An Only Connect contestant has spoken out after an episode was labelled the "worst ever" by viewers of the beloved BBC gameshow. The popular quiz show first aired in 2008 on BBC Four and is now broadcast on BBC Two, presented by Victoria Coren Mitchell. On Monday evening (August 10), the much-loved programme returned as teams Double Features and Colonial Geese went head to head.
Viewers slam low scores
In the series, contestants compete in a tournament centred around finding connections between seemingly unrelated clues. The title is believed to be derived from a passage in E. M. Forster's 1910 novel Howards End: "Only connect the prose and the passion, and both will be exalted." There are four rounds in total, with the team accumulating the most points declared the winner. Should the teams finish level, a single sudden-death puzzle is put to the captains of each side.
If a captain buzzes in first and provides the correct answer, their team takes the victory, while an incorrect answer hands the win to the opposing team. However, viewers were swift to condemn the instalment as the "worst episode ever", based on the dismal performances of both teams. One viewer even quipped that they had witnessed the "lowest score ever" in the programme's history, as reported by the Daily Express.
Contestant responds on TikTok
Following a series of challenges on the gameshow, Colonial Geese managed just 16 points in total, while Double Features trailed closely behind with a mere 14 points. During the episode, viewers posted countless remarks. One fan joked: "Think these contestants on #onlyconnect tonight meant to apply for Tipping Point." Someone else quipped: "I honestly think that this episode is one of the pranks pulled by Ant and Dec to scupper certain hosts and fully expect them to appear shortly lol #onlyconnect."
Now, contestant Katie Rae Taylor has taken to her TikTok (@wonkytescostrolley) as she addressed viewers' comments in the best way. Posting a collection of photographs from her time on the BBC programme as well as sharing some of the social media reactions, she captioned: "Victoria is just as lovely and beautiful in real life either way."
Light-hearted response
As one photograph showed Katie on the panel with Daisy Jeavons and Mia Lewis, she joked: "Took a bit too far and ended up on the 'worst episode ever' of a show but at least we had a hoot! ! ! !" She went on to display snaps from filming as she noted: "Smile so full of light and joy... little did she know..." and "just happy to be here." Katie concluded her response with a tweet from @fletcherchriss which read: "This is the worst episode of #onlyconnect ever."
