Middlesbrough Football Club has paid an emotional tribute to former academy player Anthony Renton, who has passed away at the age of 27 after a courageous nine-year fight against leukemia. The defender, who came through the ranks at the Riverside Stadium, later transitioned into coaching with the club, leaving a lasting legacy.
Club Statement: A Beacon of Positivity
In a heartfelt statement, Middlesbrough described Renton as an 'inspirational character' who never let his illness diminish his love for football. The club said: 'We are desperately saddened to report the passing of our former academy player Anthony Renton. An inspirational character, Anthony bravely battled leukaemia for almost nine years - and never let it diminish his love of our game.'
Renton was just 18 when he signed his first professional contract with Middlesbrough in July 2017, shortly before his diagnosis. Despite numerous setbacks, he remained a 'beacon of positivity' and dedicated his later years to coaching, including work with the club's academy. His commitment was recognized in March 2026 when he became the first recipient of the MFC Academy Alumni Award.
Coaching Legacy and Community Impact
Beyond Middlesbrough, Renton coached youngsters at South Park Rangers. RH Coaching paid tribute on social media, stating: 'Anth was a fantastic coach who cared deeply about the children he worked with. Despite everything, he always found a way to keep going. No one should have to go through what Anth experienced over the last ten years, especially at such a young age.'
The post continued: 'His dedication to helping young players develop, both on and off the pitch, will leave a lasting impact on so many children and families. The football community has lost one of its good ones, and he will be missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.'
Renton passed away peacefully over the weekend. Middlesbrough's first-team players had previously shown support by wearing T-shirts with his name during warm-ups for the first game of the 2017/18 season. The club extended condolences to his family and friends during this 'devastating time.'
