The Golden Union, a 1950s-style diner in Soho, has been shortlisted in the National Fish and Chip Awards 2027. It is one of ten chippies competing for the top spot in the Restaurant of the Year category.
West End diner among top ten
The retro diner, located in the heart of the West End, serves a small cod and chips for £19.95. Other specialties include homemade pies, battered gherkins, and fish butties. The restaurant has been open since 2008 and prides itself on “exceptional food, friendly service, and value for money.”
Golden Union will now face off against chippies around the UK, from The Crab & Lobster Fish Shack in South Queensferry, Scotland, to the Ocean Fish Platter in Ipswich.
London contenders in takeaway category
Last month, three London fish and chip shops were selected as frontrunners for the takeaway of the year title: Chipping Wharf Fish & Chips in Bow, Fish! Kitchen in Southwark and Skipjacks in Harrow.
Andrew Crook, president of the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), which organises the event, said: “Choosing our top 10 Restaurant of the Year shortlist is one of the most rewarding parts of the competition, and this year’s participants are showcasing remarkable skill, commitment and innovation.
“Their achievements highlight the excellent standards being set by businesses that continue to raise the bar.
“Their success is not only a testament to their hard work but also highlights the incredible opportunities available for people looking to build rewarding careers.

The full shortlist includes Chesters at Vale in Chesterfield, Lakeside Fish & Chips in Poole, Harbour Fish Bar in Folkestone, Golden Union in Soho, No1 Cromer in Norfolk, The Cod’s Scallops in Nottingham, Ocean Fish Platter in Ipswich, Saltwater Fish & Chips in Felixstowe, Whitby’s Restaurant & Takeaway in Rotherham, and The Crab & Lobster Fish Shack in South Queensferry.
