Lauren Laverne has been announced as the host of the 2026 Mercury Prize Awards Show, set to take place at Newcastle's Utilita Arena on Thursday 22nd October. The event, which is sold out, will be broadcast on BBC Four and BBC Radio 6 Music, with a range of Fringe activities and partner initiatives planned across the city during Mercury Prize week.
Performers and Broadcast Details
The Awards Show will feature live performances from Dove Ellis, Florence + The Machine, JADE, Knats, Kojey Radical, Nia Archives, Olivia Dean, RAYE, and Suede, with Pulp performing on behalf of the HELP(2) album. The overall winner of the 2026 Mercury Prize will be announced on the night.
Laverne, a 6 Music presenter and North East native, has hosted several Mercury Prize ceremonies over the years. BBC Music, the Prize's broadcast partner, will provide coverage on BBC Four from 9.30pm and on 6 Music, with Deb Grant and Nathan Shepherd broadcasting from Newcastle from 7pm and Matt Everitt providing backstage updates. Programmes will be available on BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds after broadcast.
Fringe Activities and Community Engagement
The 2026 Mercury Prize Fringe, programmed by Generator, will bring activity to Newcastle throughout the week, with partners and organisations across the city celebrating the shortlisted artists and the wider music community. Highlights include the LNER Mini Mercury Choir, made up of school children from the North East, performing two tracks at Newcastle Central Station, alongside live performances, listening parties, screenings, workshops, talks, and one-off events.
Students from Newcastle College's Mandela Collective have designed and co-created official Mercury Prize pin badges for shortlisted artists, while students from the College's Chefs Academy designed the starter for the night's dinner using local, seasonal produce. Contemporary artist Sam Wood, from Newcastle, will paint each shortlisted album artwork by hand, with the paintings available to view on the Mercury Prize Instagram.
Partnerships and Fan Zone
Fenwick will host the Fenwick Fan Zone Live Lounge-style event in The Tavern, where six North East artists selected through an open call by Generator will perform original music and acoustic covers from this year's shortlisted albums.
