Ken Bruce, 75, vows to keep working until it's no longer fun

Radio legend Ken Bruce has said he plans to keep working "until it's no longer fun." The 75-year-old broadcaster left BBC Radio 2 in 2023 after 31 years hosting its weekday mid-morning show. He has since joined Greatest Hits Radio for its mid-morning show, where he presents his famous PopMaster quiz at 10:30am.

Leaving the BBC

Appearing on Sunday's episode of Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh, Bruce opened up about his decision to leave the BBC and why he won't be leaving his Greatest Hits Radio show anytime soon. Host Alan Titchmarsh, 77, remarked: "A big, brave move, really, to Greatest Hits Radio!"

Bruce admitted: "There are times in your life when you think, this is the moment, you know, this is... I've done it here, and there's time to do something else, which I felt there was. Maybe there wasn't, but, yeah, there's still time in my life to do something just slightly different."

PopMaster's success

Discussing the success of PopMaster and taking it to Greatest Hits Radio, Bruce said: "I honestly don't know. I mean, I think, like many successful things, it's organic, it grows, the time is right. It was quite big, and then it got even bigger during lockdown, because people found it a signpost in their day, and they would all congregate or be in touch with other members of their family or friends at 10.30. It just became a sort of meeting point, and I was delighted by that."

No retirement plans

Later in the chat, Titchmarsh asked: "Will you keep going?" to which Bruce responded: "Well, yes. I mean, we always say, well, of course, if I'm fit and well enough. But so far, I mean, I'm only 24 or 25 now. I can still keep going", adding: "With God's grace, your voice sounds the same as it did when you were 25, 26, 30. So, yeah, I'll keep going until it's no longer fun. When it stops being fun, I won't do it. But luckily, I'm delighted to say, it's fun."

Titchmarsh commented: "Well, I'm glad, because we really quite enjoy listening to you... the greatest hit on Greatest Hits" with Bruce warmly responding: "God bless you. Thank you very much." Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh continues on Sundays at 9:30am on ITV and ITVX.
