Karl Stefanovic, co-host of Australia's Nine Network morning programme Today, has faced sharp criticism after interviewing far-right activist and convicted criminal Tommy Robinson on his independent podcast. The interview marks a notable shift for Stefanovic, once known as a cheeky breakfast TV host, towards right-wing commentary.
South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas said Robinson's appearance made him 'cringe' and 'crosses the line', while Prime Minister Anthony Albanese warned of political debate moving 'further and further out on the edges'. Both politicians had previously appeared on Stefanovic's show.
Pauline Hanson, leader of One Nation, defended Stefanovic and offered him a job, saying Nine would be 'bloody stupid' to let him go. Media commentators Claire Harvey and Steve Jackson of The Australian argued the interview itself was not problematic, but criticised Stefanovic for advocating rather than questioning Robinson's criminal record.
The controversy unfolded as David Koch, former Sunrise host, expressed outrage that Stefanovic and his co-host Sarah Abo were nominated for a Logie award while Sunrise was overlooked. Nine newspapers responded that ratings are not the main factor in nominations, though industry veteran Rob McKnight disagreed.
