Television and theatre writer Jonathan Harvey is set to receive a Special Recognition Honour at the British LGBT Awards. The creator of acclaimed works such as Beautiful Thing and Coronation Street will be presented with the award by Coronation Street star Helen Worth and BAFTA nominee Ellis Howard.
The British LGBT Awards announced the honour to celebrate Harvey's contribution to British culture and his work for LGBTQ+ representation on UK screens. Harvey has long been considered one of the UK's leading and most influential creative voices, helping to bring authentic LGBT+ stories into the mainstream.
Harvey will be presented with the award at a ceremony in Mayfair on Thursday. The guest list includes Boy George, fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier, and television personality Rylan Clark.
Speaking about the honour, Harvey said: 'Throughout my career, I've simply tried to tell authentic stories that felt truthful - stories about love, identity, friendship and belonging. Stories about ordinary people who live extraordinary lives. To be recognised by the LGBTQ+ community in this way means an enormous amount to me.'
Harvey's career began in theatre with plays such as Mohair (1988), Wildfire (1992), and Babies (1993), the latter earning him the Evening Standard Most Promising Playwright Award. His television credits include West End Girls, Love Junkie, Beautiful Thing, Murder Most Horrid, and work on ITV soap Coronation Street. He also created the iconic comedy series Gimme Gimme Gimme.
