Johnny Depp is in talks to return in Pirates of the Caribbean 6, but the conditions of this comeback are sending fans into a frenzy.

Over the weekend, Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer was asked about Johnny Depp returning for a sixth film. He revealed to Deadline: “We’re talking with Johnny, we’re working on a screenplay, and hopefully we can get this done.”
And now the same outlet reports: “Separate from Bruckheimer, some solid sources tell us that the continuation won’t feel like just the nth tale of Captain Jack Sparrow, rather the next chapter will focus on Margot Robbie’s protagonist with Sparrow as a side character. Essentially, an evolution of the franchise.”
This makes sense given Robbie’s been circling leading a Pirates of the Caribbean reboot for the last few years.
Fan Reactions
However, some fans are furious that Depp’s Captain Jack is set to be sidelined. One fan tweeted, “Johnny don’t return please. If he is a side character he should not return.” Another wrote on X, “This is objectively a bad decision” and one predicted, “flop is coming.”
Meanwhile, a fan shared, “I 100% support Margot being in it but whoever at Disney said Johnny should be a side character should honestly not only lose their job but their right to free speech.”
Nevertheless, some fans were just pleased that Depp would be in Pirates 6 at all, with one commenting, “As long as Johnny is in it I don’t care”, and another adding, “As long as he’s in it I’ll take it!”
Supporting Role Debate
Meanwhile, others pointed out that Depp’s character was a supporting role to begin with. A fan wrote: “He was nominally a side character in the first Pirates movie. He kind of stole the franchise out from under Orlando Bloom.”
Interestingly, Depp was Oscar-nominated for the first film, but in the Best Actor category, not Best Supporting Actor. Another added: “Reminder that Jack Sparrow was originally the side guy who served as the catalyst for the plot to start, they only focused on him in 4 and 5 which are the worst movies in the franchise.”
