McMonagles Fish and Chips, a restaurant on the Forth & Clyde Canal in Clydebank, Scotland, is offering a 'sail-thru' dinner service, allowing customers to order and receive sustainably caught fish and hand-cut chips directly from their paddleboards, kayaks, or canoes without stepping ashore.
Unique dining experience on the water
The family-run restaurant, which opened in 1993, has been serving meals to boaters at its window, and in a Metro exclusive, the restaurant has revealed plans to introduce a wall menu and a QR code to make ordering easier, along with handy baskets to pass meals down to customers.
Though it spent its first few years floating on the 35-mile-long canal, McMonagles is now fixed in place with cement.
Menu and recognition
The restaurant has gained popularity on TikTok for dishes like Frickles (battered pickles), battered baked potato with macaroni, and battered baked potato with steak pie. It also offers gluten-free fish and chips and gluten-free vinegar, as well as pizzas, vegan pizzas, loaded fries, burgers, and kids' meals such as fish fingers and hamburgers, plus halal options.
McMonagles, which describes itself as 'the world’s most unique fish & chip restaurant', was nominated for the Scottish Fish & Chip Awards 2026 in July. It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am-9pm, with 'sail-thru', delivery, and takeaway services available from 11am-9pm.
Growing popularity and local attractions
The quirky eatery has gone viral on TikTok and Instagram, prompting calls for more sail-thru restaurants across the UK. For now, it remains the only one.
Visitors to Clydebank can also explore the Clydebank Museum and Art Gallery, which has showcased local history since 1980, or enjoy hiking views over the River Clyde and Loch Lomond on the Kilpatrick Hills. Glasgow, a half-hour drive away, offers attractions like Glasgow Cathedral, botanic gardens, and the Glasgow Science Centre with an IMAX theatre, as well as over 260 pubs.
