John Cleese has responded to political commentator Matthew Stadlen after Stadlen launched a series of tweets criticising the 86-year-old Monty Python star over his political views and support for Restore Britain leader Rupert Lowe.
Stadlen's criticism
In his post, Stadlen wrote: "John Cleese, a man whose comedic genius has brought joy to many millions, has allied himself to some of the darkest forces in Britain. He has become the caricature he once mocked. Disappointing to witness the decline and fall of one of the most talented entertainers in British history."
Stadlen's attack appears to reference Cleese's recent public backing for Lowe, a political figure who has led a crowdfunding initiative related to grooming gangs.
Cleese's response
Cleese fired back with characteristic wit: "I was disappointed to read that it's over for me. I have to remake my plans now... Good bye, everyone."
Cleese has been outspoken about his political beliefs for decades but has lately shifted rightward due to worries about immigration, free speech and Islamic fundamentalism.
Political history
Cleese previously described his political stance as "lightly Left of centre" and featured in party political broadcasts for the Liberal Democrats during the 1990s. He declined a peerage offered by Paddy Ashdown, the party's former leader, in 1999.
In recent years, he has become increasingly vocal on political matters, voicing backing for the UK Independence Party in 2014. During a Telegraph interview that year, he stated that he was "all for immigration" but voiced concerns about "people who come here who really don't like our culture".
He has also been forthright regarding grooming gangs, attacking the BBC's reporting of Lowe's crowdfunding initiative earlier this year.
In response to a post on X urging people to share the first word that springs to mind above a photograph of Lowe, Cleese declared: "I trust this man more than any of the other leaders." Lowe replied: "John Cleese is a patriot. His support for our rape-gang inquiry is appreciated."
