Hamilton College pupil Caleb Browning marked the 250th anniversary of American independence by piping on Utah Beach, a site of the D-Day landings, during a summer holiday in Normandy.
A memorable holiday performance
The 13-year-old, who is going into S3, was on a two-week visit to France with his family and spent the last few days visiting the sites of the Allied D-Day landings.
Caleb started playing in his local Coalburn Pipe Band in South Lanarkshire at the age of seven and began taking lessons when the school introduced them at the start of 2025.
He was given his first set of pipes that Christmas and, determined to make the most of any opportunity to play, he packed them for the trip to the continent.
Playing on Gold and Utah Beaches
He played Highland Laddie on Gold Beach in Arromanches-les-Bains, where he was staying with his mum, dad, and sister.
With the following day being the 4th of July and the USA celebrating its 250th anniversary, Caleb headed for Utah Beach, the scene of an invasion led by the US 4th Infantry Division which secured a vital beachhead to help capture the port of Cherbourg.
In front of admiring onlookers, Caleb piped his way across the sands, the poignant sounds of Amazing Grace drifting across the iconic beach.
Family pride and school support
Dad Dave is a teacher at Hamilton College and said the experience was a proud moment for the family.
“The beaches of Normandy played such an important part of wartime history and it was a special trip for us to see them in real life,” he said.
“Caleb being able to play his pipes on Utah Beach on the 4th of July with America celebrating its 250th year of independence, made the whole experience extra memorable. It’s something I’m sure he will cherish for a long time.
“Hamilton College prides itself on the opportunities it provides for its pupils. In particular, it has a strong focus on the performing arts and the bagpipes lessons it now offers has been a great addition to the curriculum.”
Hamilton College offers music through Advanced Higher and was a finalist for the Independent School of the Year for Performing Arts in 2025.
Head teacher Richard Charman said: “It has been fantastic to see Caleb’s progress since taking up the bagpipes at Hamilton College. To have performed on the beaches of Normandy is an experience he will remember for many years.
“We are delighted to see him making the most of the opportunities available to him and couldn’t be more pleased to see him growing in confidence with every performance.”
