Scots actor Gregor Fisher, best known for playing Rab C. Nesbitt, has delighted fans by sharing his own steak pie recipe with "a twist" on his new YouTube cooking series. The 72-year-old's home cooking videos have turned him into an internet sensation, and his first episode featuring his steak pie special has gone down a treat with viewers.
The steak pie with a twist
Addressing viewers, Fisher said: "Hello, I've got my pinny on and I'm going to make steak pie today. Yes, steak pie always with a twist." He explained that he would be making "slightly more complicated recipes nowadays for this channel because you get 10 minutes and not the 3 minutes you get on that Instagram. So we've migrated to the YouTube and I hope you'll join us."
Fisher cooked the steak pie out in the garden after his son-in-law built him an outdoor kitchen, and also because he didn't want to "hum the house out" with the smell. He shared a step-by-step guide, saying: "We're not looking for prizes here. We're just looking for fun and good flavour."
Ingredients and method
To make Gregor Fisher's steak pie recipe, you will require: 1kg stewing steak, 2 medium or 1 large onion (roughly chopped), a beef stock cube, red wine (optional), 150g shredded suet, 300g self raising flour, 200ml (or thereby) water, and egg wash.
Arranging chopped pieces of beef in an iron skillet, he told the camera: "We're going to fry beef okay? Stewing steak, ask your butcher. Go to the butcher if you can, support your local butcher." He added: "I'm going to fry these bits of beef to get a bit of caramelisation on it and get a bit of flavour. Do not over crowd the pan because then it kinda goes a bit watery and you want it to be nice and crisp."
Next, Fisher chopped some onion and added it on top of the beef in the pan. For the gravy, he sprinkled a beef stock cube on top of the beef and added a generous amount of red wine before putting the lid on the pot. He left the meat bubbling away on a low simmer for just over two hours.
Gregor revealed he was going "to make it go a bit further" by adding both beef and pork sausages into the pie. He told viewers: "I didn't put any seasoned flour in the stew, I don't like all that gloopy sort of glutinous stuff. So you can thicken that with a wee bit of gravy granules or Bisto if you want."
Suet pastry and fan reaction
Moving onto the pastry, he explained: "So normally it would be puff pastry but I've done that before and I thought I would do something a bit different. This is suet pastry. It should be beef suet but this is veggie suet. Why? Cos that's what I had in the house."
Combining 300g of self raising flour, 150g of suet and 300ml of water in a bowl, he stirred it all together until it formed into a ball. He then kneaded it until the pastry was a flat circular shape. Placing it on top of the stew, he told viewers to brush some egg wash on top and stick it in the oven for twenty minutes at 200C.
Going in for a taste test at the end, he exclaimed: "Words fail me. It's crispy on top and soft inside. Beautiful."
Fans rushed to the comment section on YouTube to praise Gregor's Steak Pie with Suet Pastry tutorial. One wrote: "Sausages in a steak pie! That’s a weegie thing." A second wrote: "What a legend - Gregor was born for YouTube!"
A third Scot gushed: "Oor ain folk doin what we do best! Such a pleasure to watch! if it turns into a cook book I'll buy it! Magic!" Another replied: "Pure dead brilliant ..love it. Thanks for sharing, will definitely try." Someone else chimed in: "Who would have thought we would see Rab C making a steak pie on YouTube. Quality!"
The actor's cooking career took off in 2025 when his daughter Cissie encouraged him to set up an Instagram account and share his recipes. Gregor previously admitted that he thought the idea was "doomed to failure". Fisher shares Scottish tips and twists for his cooking, including adding porridge oats to his mince and how to make homemade potato scones.
