Gospel singer Nikki Ross Bellamy has died aged 54. The Houston-based artist recently stopped touring to address health issues, including symptoms of temporary blindness. No cause of death has been provided.

Church announces death

Her church, New Jerusalem Cathedral, announced the news on Facebook on August 14. The statement read: “Sis. Nikki was more than an extraordinary voice. She was a beloved daughter of this ministry whose remarkable gift carried her before audiences around the world while her roots remained deeply connected to her church family. Her voice was unmistakable, her presence unforgettable, and the impact of her music and ministry reached far beyond the walls of the church.”

“She was deeply loved by her church, cherished by her Bishop, and embraced by a community that celebrated the tremendous gift God placed within her,” it continued. “While countless people came to know Sis. Nikki through her music and public ministry, we had the privilege of knowing and loving the woman behind the voice.”

Musical legacy and tributes

Ross recorded with Kirk Franklin, Ricky Dillard, James Fortune, Israel Houghton, PJ Morton, Harry Connick Jr., Robert Glasper and Kim Burrell. Harry Connick Jr. paid tribute on Instagram, writing: “My heart is broken. Nikki ross, one of the greatest singers to ever live, has died. She was a hero of mine. I had the honor of singing with her on 'Love Wins', with @kimburrelllove, @doobiepowell, @prophesyingguitarist, and @jimmygreenemusic... I'll always keep you close, sweet Nikki. God bless your beautiful family. I love you, @nikki.l.ross.”
