Golf course Indian restaurant named Wales' best at ARTA 2026

The Grand Sultan, an Indian restaurant situated on a golf course in Margam, has been named South Wales Restaurant of the Year for 2026 at the Asian Restaurant & Takeaway Awards (ARTA).

Third major ARTA win for Margam venue

The title marks the venue's third major win at the awards. The Grand Sultan was previously named Restaurant of the Year: Wales at the ARTAs in 2019 and 2022, and took the Best Chef title in 2020.

In 2021, it also won Best Restaurant in Wales at the Asian Curry Awards and was Welsh runner-up at the British Curry Awards, an award it had previously won.

Location and background

The restaurant is found on the outskirts of Port Talbot, within the Lakeside Golf course in Margam. It was opened by cousins and business partners Sunny Rahman and Samsoo Miah, with the name inspired by a five-star resort in Bangladesh.

Writing on Instagram, the restaurant's team expressed their joy at the title, saying: "A MASSIVE thank you to every single one of our loyal customers who have supported us, dined with us, recommended us and backed us along the way. Without you, none of this would be possible. This award belongs to you just as much as it belongs to us!"

Menu and specialities

Alongside old favourites like tikka masalas, biryanis and jalfrezis, the menu includes a range of chef's specials, many of which are often put forward for judges during competitions. The restaurant serves both dine-in and takeaway, is open seven days a week, and offers a buffet on Sunday afternoons.

When the venue won the title of best in Wales at ARTA in 2022, a reviewer was impressed by the menu's breadth and specialities. One such dish is the Anarash Murghi, served with a special masala sauce inside a whole stuffed pineapple.

The reviewer also tried the duck meetha, thinly-sliced duck off the bone in a rich creamy sauce prepared with almonds, palm sugar and honey, and a starter described as "the best I've ever had at an Indian restaurant". That starter was the king prawn sukka, a "circle of golden deep fried puri bread was folded in two and oozed a dark red generous filling". She added: "The bread was warm, crisp and not at all greasy while the prawns were juicy and the sweet and sour sauce was a sensation."

The Grand Sultan is located at Water St, Eglwys Nunydd, Port Talbot SA13 2PA, and can be reached at 01639 892223.
