Irish actress Jessie Buckley won the Golden Globe for best actress in a drama for her portrayal of Agnes Hathaway, the wife of William Shakespeare, in the film adaptation of Maggie O'Farrell's novel Hamnet. The film also took home the award for best motion picture drama.
The Netflix series Adolescence continued its awards season success, with Stephen Graham winning best actor in a TV mini series, Owen Cooper best supporting actor, and Erin Doherty best supporting actress. The show, about a teenage boy accused of murder, also won the prize for best limited series. Co-creator Jack Thorne said the series is not about fearing young people, but about 'the filth and the debris we have laid in their path.'
Graham appeared to read notes from his palm as he accepted his award, thanking his wife and family. He was momentarily distracted by Queen Latifah in the audience, bowing and saying 'wow' before continuing. Cooper, a Liverpool FC fan, ended his speech with the club's anthem: 'You'll never walk alone.'
Teyana Taylor won best supporting actress in a drama film for her role in One Battle After Another, telling young brown girls that 'our softness is not a liability.' Paul Thomas Anderson won best director and best screenplay for the same film. Timothée Chalamet won best actor in a musical or comedy for Marty Supreme, beating Leonardo DiCaprio and George Clooney.
Stellan Skarsgård won best supporting actor for Sentimental Value, and Rose Byrne won best actress in a musical/comedy for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, thanking her husband Bobby Cannavale, who was at a reptile expo in New Jersey.
