Gogglebox hints at new cast members after couple axed

Channel 4 has hinted that two new sets of families are about to join Gogglebox. Fans have been left delighted at the news that the series is poised to return soon, with series 28 beginning on Friday, 4th September.

Last year, five new households joined Gogglebox including Glasgow-based friends, a Surrey family, Cotswolds residents, Edinburgh sisters and a Yorkshire mother and daughter-in-law pairing.

Brand new living rooms teased

Now, the show has revealed a major hint that two more households are joining the show, which first started airing in 2013 and has become a firm Friday night staple across the country.

In a social media post, hours ahead of the show's comeback, the Gogglebox team offered a preview of some of the familiar sofas that feature on the show. At the end, were two 'brand new' living rooms that are being added to the line-up.

The caption stated: "Swipe to the end for a surprise...Brand new #Gogglebox starts Friday 4th September 9pm on @channel4," reports the Mirror. It continued: "Don't forget to #VOTEGOGGLEBOX for best FACTUAL ENTERTAINMENT at the @officialntas Link below and in bio."

Fans react to missing sofas

Viewers were left thrilled at the announcement, though several shared concerns that some sofas belonging to well-known cast members appeared to be missing from the post. "Quite a few have left by the looks of it," one person wrote.

The new additions come after one couple were axed from Gogglebox last year. Glaswegian couple Joe and Roisin joined the show in February 2022, becoming the first Scottish cast members on the programme in six years.

Joe and Roisin's departure

However, they were dropped from the line-up last year, confirming on social media that they'd not been asked to return to the show. Roisin shared: "After three and a half years of sitting on the sofa channel 4 have decided it's time for Joe and I to stretch our legs and have not asked us back for season 26. Therefore we are leaving the Gogglebox family.

"We couldn't be more grateful to Studio Lambert for the opportunity, the experience has actually been so mad and we will miss watching tv with you all on Friday nights! It's been an honour to represent Scotland as some of the first Scottish people on the show and prove we don't actually need subtitles."

They went on to pay tribute to the crew they'd worked with over the months filming for Gogglebox, adding: "We have made friends for life and after filming every week for years you have become like our family! We could not have asked for better people to work with and we will miss you immensely.

"A huge thank you to everyone who has watched us, met us, and supported us during this experience, it for sure has been a once in a lifetime opportunity. Time to watch tv in silence for a bit and put down the popcorn."

Gogglebox returns on Friday, September 4 at 9pm on Channel 4.
